Information about KIEV Founded in the 5th century, Kiev, a scenic city of close to 3 million people situated on the Dnipro River, is the bustling capital of Ukraine. Ancient Kievan Rus, which reached its greatest period of ascendancy during the 11th and 12th centuries, was a center of trade routes between the Baltic and the Mediterranean. Modern Kiev has made a quantum leap from the days when it was governed centrally as another city of the former Soviet Union. Some of the remnants of that period are maintained, but more as a testament to its progress than an endearment to a bygone era. Kiev, is clean, welcoming and steeped in culture. The people are welcoming and the views from the parks across the river and the city are breathtaking. Kiev offers buildings and surroundings which give a sense of purpose and makes one very glad to be there. There are the magnificent cathedrals, opera, ballet and all that is welcoming in a comfortable, modern city. It's architecture is frequently imposing, giving the city grandeur and attesting to its heritage. On the other hand, the city sparkles with light and airiness and will tempt you into exploring both its history and its modernity. The 1980's were marked by increasing political impotence of Soviet leadership. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident of April 26,1986, brings back painful memories for all Ukrainians. This disaster caused tens of thousands of deaths and health related problems, and inflicted enormous ecological and economic damage.
